At the end of the pregnancy period a woman’s body begins to show signs that time has come for
the baby to be delivered. The entire process that leads to the birth of the baby is called the labor
and delivery process. Labor and delivery are physiologic procedure through which the products
of involved in conception are ejected outside the uterus (Groll, 2013). The processes are very
specific to every woman and most of the women go through the process normally with minimal
or no intervention of health care providers. During the labor and delivery process there are stages
that are followed but they are very exclusive to every woman even if the woman has had
previous deliveries before. Delivery can either take place naturally or through a cesarean process.
The process of labor usually takes place weeks before the actually delivery day. The process of
labor and delivery is very complex and it is this paper that I will be covering the entire process
stage by stage until the time when the mother leaves the hospital care with a baby seated in the
Labor process takes place in three stages and it usually begins a few weeks before a woman
gives birth to her child. The time it takes for the labor signs to begin showing in women varies
from one woman to the other. There are common signs that show that labor is nearing and they
include lightening and the increase in the vaginal discharge. Lightening refers to the time when
the fetus moves to the lower part of the uterus and seats on the pelvis (Cohen & Friedman, 2011).
Lightening is very important because it shows that the body is ready for the delivery process and
to some women there is the increased energy and impulse to do house chores such as cooking
and cleaning which can be simply described as “nesting” (Cohen & Friedman, 2011).

When the symptoms of labor begin to manifest themselves pregnant women are advised to
consult their doctors and midwives as soon as possible. This is very important because the doctor
can make the decisions on whether one needs to go the hospital or need to go through some
checking. There are several signs that proceed the labor. There is the contractions that change in
intervals from long to short. Lower back pain and cramping that persists. The water breaks which
can either be in one gush or it may trickle. There is bloody mucus discharge which can be pink or
red in color this is mainly because the cervix is dilating or opening up and becoming softer and
thinner (Cold et al., 2017). At this particular stage the labor can be very soon or it may be days
There are instances where there may be false labor signs especially to first mothers who are not
familiar with the signs. The tightening of the uterus also called Braxton Hicks at times may be
painful and may be confused with labor. To identify whether the contraction are true or false
pregnant women can time the contraction using a stop watch. For true labor contractions they are
regular and frequent compared...
