Question Description

I'm working on a humanities writing question and need guidance to help me learn.

  • 1st paragraph - As with most stories, with Poe's "The Raven" we only get one side of the story, the speaker’s side. Do you think the speaker is reliable? Is it possible that the speaker is making up or distorting some of what went on that evening that the Raven first came to visit? Explain your answer using specific examples.
  • 2nd paragraph - You can interpret this poem literally - a wild bird entered a man's home one dark and dreary evening, repeatedly spoke one word to the man, and then never again moved, or left his perch. In fact, the speaker of the poem recalls that the bird "still is sitting, STILL is sitting above his chamber door" implying that he's been there for quite some time never eating, drinking, or moving. On the literal level, you know it is impossible for this to happen without the bird dying. So, think deeper on a figurative/symbolic level. What else - more figuratively - might have entered that grieving man's life that night. What idea/mood/concept might the bird symbolize? Explain your answer using specific examples. Please be in MLA format

The Raven Analysis
The speaker is unreliable because he justifies every event as valid, yet he is sleeping. The
fact that he was in an unconscious state guarantees that whatever details he posits as with the
bird and angels as fictional and unreliable. There is a possibility of the speaker distorting what
happened before, during, and after the Raven...
