For many decades, children have always occupied the lowest group in society due to their
age. Society has always defined its responsibilities while also putting expectations on how a
child should behave. For example, parents expect children to grow up respectful to their adults;
this involves practicing a set of behaviors expected of them; failure to practice these behaviors,
children are therefore deemed disrespectful, and in many cases punished for behaving otherwise.
Today, many children and youth researchers and advocates have emphasized the importance of
children's involvement in developing and participating in the social environment. Still, often
children's participation is debated as if it were a brand new, Universal phenomenon. Jessica
Taft's (2019) article on Peru's working-children activism offers rich, convincing, and motivating
contradictory evidence, though she is wary of idealizing the campaign.
According to Jessica's (2019) book, the Peruvian movement of working children
understands the intergenerational relationships based on guiding emphasis on horizontalism; this
is defined as a social partnership that promotes the establishment, growth, and preservation of
social structures to ensure that power is distributed fairly. The Peruvian movement believes that
children, like adults, have social meaning in society; hence, they should be treated with the equal
respect they deserve. While Peruvian movements advocate for equal social structures, including
children, Taft's book also recognizes the social inequality among children and adults, but
importantly, she gives contradicting opinions on how children and adults view the roles of
children in society.
