A 3.10-mg sample of dioctyl phthalate (C24H38O4), a plasticizer, is dissolved in H2O to give 650mL of solution.

What is the concentration of dioctyl phthalate in parts per billion (ppb)?

Assuming the volume of the solution is equal to the volume of water.

Then 650 ml=650x1g/ml=650 g solution

Therefore the concentration of dioctyl phthalate is

3.10x10^-3/650=4.77x10^-6=4.77 ppm=4.77x10^3 ppb
