The political anatomy of Haiti’s armed gangs
Summary
The underlying issue discussed by Djems Olivier is violence used by armed gangs in
Haiti to achieve their goals of drug trafficking and disrupting the flow of aid to low-income
families. This challenge dates back to the Duvalier family dictatorial regime's fall in 1986, which
resulted in a new form of violence in Haiti (Olivier, 2021, p.1). Haiti faced numerous violence in
the past decades through paramilitary structures that disrupted societal peace and significantly
violated human rights. These armed groups had a complex network that facilitated their
operations in the rural and urban centers. The gangs comprise drug traffickers and mafia
networks, consistently terrorizing the Haitians and are perceived as death squads.
The leading personalities mentioned in this article include the Duvalier family and
President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Duvalier’s family dictatorial regime collapse in 1986 marked
the genesis of a new violence cycle in Haiti. It paved the way for series of violence perpetrated
through paramilitary organizations to disrupt individual’s peace. The second leading personality
mentioned in this article is President Jean-Bertrand Aristide; his forceful departure in early 2004
