Characterization and Meaning Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use” explores a variety of issues including complexities of heritage, sibling rivalry, and personal insecurity. Through the course of the story, the plot is always secondary to the ways the characters are revealed to the reader. It is through this characterization that the reader is able to wrestle with the different ideas expressed by the author. In a 3-page essay answer the following: What do you think the story is saying about the idea of heritage? "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker
In her short story, “Everyday Use” Alice walker takes us through the struggles and
life in the contemporary African traditional cultures, unchanged by the new world activities
and influences. She gives us three characters that each proves how they every day take part in
the old way of life that they have inherited from the ancestors and culture as a whole. By
using characterization and symbols, inheritance is shown in the comparison of the three
Johnson family members encounters in an African American setup, ensuring the "Every Day"
theme comes out clearly throughout the short story. In her story, heritage is a very important
aspect of life in African American cultures (Tuten pg. 4). Hence, Alice mainly focuses on this
theme of Heritage. This theme is indicated by the life of Dee who goes to the school, and she
becomes sophisticated. Maggie has been left at home with her mother where they live an oldfashioned and traditional life. It proves that in one way or another the traditions has made
aware the critical things and activities to the offspring into the new generation.
To begin with, the setup of the story shows some connection between the characters
and the physical environment. Maggie and Mrs Johnson seem to be so comfortable and
