CDV444: Cognition, Language, & Schooling
Spring 2021
Directions for Paper Proposal
Description: The goal of the course paper is for students to expand their learning in an area of
cognitive development that interests them. For their course paper, students will reflect on an
activity/experience/environment that they engaged in while growing up (e.g., sports, art, music,
video game play, media use, religious practices). Students will research how that
activity/experience/environment influences the development of a domain of cognition (e.g.,
Perception; Executive Function, Strategies, and Problem Solving; Language; Folk Knowledge;
Social Cognition; or Memory) at different ages Pre-Natal; Infancy; Toddlerhood; Early
Childhood; Middle Childhood; Adolescence; Aging). Students will choose 1 activity and 1
domain of cognition, and at least 2 age timepoints.
Course Paper: The course paper is a 6- to 8-page paper (no title page), in which the student
summarizes research about the effects of an event, practice or activity they participated in
growing up on cognitive development. Students can choose the activity and aspect of cognitive
development about which they write. Students must reference 4 peer-reviewed, empirical
(research) articles related to their topic.
Paper Proposal: The project proposal is a 2- to 3-page document outlining the student’s plan for
the course paper. This assignment will also allow the student to get corrections on their
references’ APA format, with enough time to fix them before turning in the Course Paper. It
will also allow them to ensure they have chosen an appropriate cognitive domain and empirical
sources.
The project proposal must include:
(1) the activity/environment/experience and domain of cognition that will be the focus of
the paper,
(2) a thesis statement about the effect that activity has on cognitive development,
(3) APA-style citations for the 4 articles the student plans to use, and
(4) 2-3 sentences about each article that describes how that article speaks to the thesis
statement and justifies its inclusion in the paper; must include the ages of participants in
the studies in the paper
General requirements:
Typed and double-spaced; 1 in. margins, 12 pt. Times New Roman & left-justified (not
centered)
In the top left corner of the first page, students must identify their proposal using the
following template:
