Introduction
Case 11 highlighted the Guinea worm epidemic that once threatened
Africa and Asia, as well as the steps that have been taken to reduce its
prevalence
In the context, 20 countries spreading across two continents were
victims to the Guinea worm menace, which affected over 3.5 million
individuals prior to 1986 which marked the onset of the eradication
campaign2.
After the launch of the reduction campaign, overwhelming success
has been realized given that in 2005, just 11,000 cases were reported
in nine endemic countries, with Sudan which was then affected by
civil war reporting over 1,000 cases2.
Case study Summary
Guinea worm disease (GWD) also referred to as Dracunculiasis when
defined is a parasitic disease that emanates as a result of the nematode
worm.
The disease is prevalent in Africa and Asia, because they are defined by
the presence of unsanitary drinking water which favors the habitation of
the nematode worm1,2.
Prior to the commencement of the eradication campaign in 1986, over
120 million individuals stretched across 20 nations were at great risk of
contacting Dracunculiasis2.
The success of the campaign was one of the greatest achievements at the
time because it was grounded on the behavioral change of the people.
