Research Paper Dr. Finnegan’s Classes – Spring 2021 Choose one author of literature that we have read this semester or choose another published literary writer. All authors are subject to my approval. (The best strategy is to choose one work written by your author. A story, novel, poem or play is best and then limit you research to that one work.) Once I approve your author, begin your research using the FIT Library and its on-line sources that I will show you during class on Friday, March 12th. Each of you will meet with me during class time to discuss your approach to the research and once I have approved your plan, you proceed as follows: 1. Start with biographical information on your author. Find at least one good biographical source and use this information for the first part of your paper. 2. Choose one literary source, preferably a scholarly (peer reviewed) or critical article published in a university press journal. Use this source as the second part of your paper. 3. Choose another source of the same quality as your first source and make this source the third part of your paper. 4. Choose a third source of the same quality as your first two sources and make this source the fourth part of your paper. 5. The fifth and last part of your paper is a conclusion in which you will comment on what you have learned about your author from your research. General Guidelines: Use MLA Guidelines from your Bedford Handbook pp. 255-412. Length: 1,000 – 1,500 Words. Due: Wednesday April 21st (last day of classes). Sources: lib.fit.edu. JSTOR/LRC/Summon. 1. John Steinbeck was born in 1902 in Salinas in California (O'Neil 12). He is the third born
in their family, and his parents are John and Olive.
2. John began to learn how to read at age 3 and when he was 4 he could comfortably read
sentences aloud.
3. He learned grammar when he was in third grade and was never free to socializing with his
colleagues at school.
4. He came across Thomas Malory's Morte d' Arthur, which influenced his interest and a
positive attitude toward writing.
5. He spent most of his time in high school writing, although this ceased at the end of the
junior year when he contracted pneumonia.
6. He joined Stanford University and was working as a labourer to get some money while in
College. He started writing stories out of his own experiences and describing his
colleagues' characters at work.
7. In 1924, John was friends with Frank Fenton, Stanford Spectator's editor, who
recommended the publication of "Finger of Cloud." It was one of John's stories, and he
received positive comments about the story from the students on the campus and a teacher
called Edith Merrielees.
8. Edith analyzed the work in front of the class and encouraged John to use imagination with
characters and circumstances. It was because many of his stories were about his
experiences.

9. Elizabeth Smith was a teacher at Stanford University. She read "A lady in infra-red" written
by John; after being encouraged by Edith to expand his writing techniques, she inspired
him to continue with the story to write a novel.
10. Rickett introduced John to write about places and a particular group of people. John joined

11. Finally, John began to work together with O' Hara on the play novel "Of Mice and Men."

1. In "Of Mice and Men," John Steinbeck writing can be related to the American dream.
2. Lennie is excited about this, and he imagines how life will be once they have their little
piece of land.
3. They had challenges getting enough money, and when Candy learns about this, he decides
to lend them some cash
4. The union between George and Lennie is criticized since, in ordinary life, we know that
when two people join efforts, they tend to complete a specific task faster and more
effectively.
5. Steinbeck effectively uses imagery in this play. He chooses words wisely to demonstrate
the beauty of Curley's wife. He indicates that she puts her hands on her hips, has widespaced eyes and rouged lips.

6. Steinbeck uses language to demonstrate prolepses. For instance, when George and Lennie
get to the ranch, they interact with different persons, including the Boss, Curley's wife,
Candy and Slim.
7. Lennie is difficult to handle, but George is supportive and takes care of him. The author
presents a scenario where Lennie kills Curley's wife by mistake, and George had to resolve
this problem before his friend had a painful death.
8. George decides to kill Lennie and does not put into account that he is mentally disabled.
He knew so well that rough justice would be the case if Curley knew about this.
