I had the same observation about the writers this week.John Grisham writing was influenced by him being a lawyer that he even name one of his books “The Firm” and the other “The Client”.Those are just some of his book that where influenced by it but he has a lot more.Even in the story that we read this week it is evident that he relays a lot on his previous career as a lawyer. The story is more about how a man change this view about homeless people and yet he finds a way to become a poverty lawyer and fight for the homeless.

POST 1
Part 1
After reading the biographies of the poets I can see many differences in the writing from past
poets in our lessons. Sharon Olds, Linda Pastan, and Larry Levis are realists and write about
their personal experiences. Sharon Olds, though received many awards for her poetry, also
received negative input in reference to the content and openness to write about her family; her
parents, children and her sex life with her husband. Though the other poets write about personal
experiences, Olds past the lined marked in the sand when it comes to how personal is okay put
out there for all to see. This type of poetry would not have been acceptable in the earlier eras we
have read due to the content.
Response
I held similar perception regarding the type of writing done by Sharon Olds, Linda Pastan, and
Larry Levis and I too think from their bibliographies and their poetry works we covered, these
poets pressed a lot of focus in writing about their personal life. At some point I shared similar
views and feelings as the writer as the works of Olds are just too personal constituting of
materials as a person I wouldn’t like other people to see or find out about myself. Although
contemporary works were concerned with writing about their personal lives, Olds puts too much
into it and ends up exposing information that is too personal and is meant for self rather than an
audience.
Part 2
Sharon Olds- The Planned Child. Olds writes about the child in the womb and its journey of
being born. Olds writes the poem from the perspective of the infant, not herself during child birth.
Olds looks from the perspective of the family member she is writing about, and placing herself in
the background.
Linda Pastan- The Obligation to Be Happy. In this poem, Pastan is writing about the perception
of another about her. How the view of another is telling her she should be happy, and how she
has to fake a smile to “get them off her back”.
Larry Levis- Winter Stars. Larry Levis is speaking of his father and the past in which they had
that lead to the place they have found themselves. Levis speaks of forgiveness and death as he
describes death through the stars of night. The poem is not only about Levis, but his father too.
All three poets were in the poems they wrote about, but they were not the main character, they
stood in the background and was part of the poem.
