Media Violence By: Chelsea Pounds Introduction Media Violence and its effects on children is an important component in the field of Psychology and similar fields of study such as Criminology. Data collected from this research proposal will enhance our knowledge on the effects media violence has on children and the behaviors they exhibit. Furthermore, it can help predict and prevent future aggressive (criminal) behaviors. “While violence is not new to the human race, it is an increasing problem in modern society (http://www.aacap.org/aacap/medical_students _and_residents/mentorship_matters/developm entor/the_impact_of_media_violence_on_childr en_and_adolescents_opportunities_for_clinical_ interventions.aspx)” Research Topic: Media Violence Importance: Etiology of violent behavior Research Question: What effects does exposure to media violence have on children? Hypothesis: Exposure to media violence does impact children Literature Review There is consistent evidence that violent imagery in television, film and video, and computer games has substantial effects on arousal, thoughts and emotions, this increases the likelihood of aggressive behavior in younger children (Brown & Hamilton, 2005). Methods used in previous research:  Experimental studies Experimental studies are less susceptible to confounding because the investigator determines who is exposed and who is unexposed.  Meta-Analysis To test whether the results of the accumulated studies on media violence and aggressive behavior are consistent with the theories that have evolved to explain the effects.  Longitudinal An observational research method in which data is gathered for the same subjects repeatedly over a period of time.  Cross-sectional A type of observational study that analyses data collected from a population, or a representative subset, at a specific point in time. Research Design The Mixed Methods research design is most appropriate research method to answer my research question because it integrates both Quantitative and Qualitative research. The Qualitative perspective can provide a description of how children are effected by exposure to media violence through observation, surveys or questionnaires. This aspect of the research is used to assist the formation of quantitative data. Ethics American Psychological Association (2010): 2.01 Boundaries of Competence (a) Psychologists provide services, teach and conduct research with populations and in areas only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education, training, supervised experience, consultation, study or professional experience. (b) Where scientific or professional knowledge in the discipline of psychology establishes that an understanding of factors associated with age, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language or socioeconomic status is essential for effective implementation of their services or research, psychologists have or obtain the training, experience, consultation or supervision necessary to ensure the competence of their services, or they make appropriate referrals, except as provided in Standard 2.02, Providing Services in Emergencies. (c) Psychologists planning to provide services, teach or conduct research involving populations, areas, techniques or technologies new to them undertake relevant education, training, supervised experience, consultation or study. (d) When psychologists are asked to provide services to individuals for whom appropriate mental health services are not available and for which psychologists have not obtained the competence necessary, psychologists with closely related prior training or experience may provide such services in order to ensure that services are not denied if they make a reasonable effort to obtain the competence required by using relevant research, training, consultation or study. (e) In those emerging areas in which generally recognized standards for preparatory training do not yet exist, psychologists nevertheless take reasonable steps to ensure the competence of their work and to protect clients/patients, students, supervisees, research participants, organizational clients and others from harm. (f) When assuming forensic roles, psychologists are or become reasonably familiar with the judicial or administrative rules governing their roles. 4.01 Maintaining Confidentiality Psychologists have a primary obligation and take reasonable precautions to protect confidential information obtained through or stored in any medium, recognizing that the extent and limits of confidentiality may be regulated by law or established by institutional rules or professional or scientific relationship. Drug addiction affects everyone around the user. Drug addiction in children is becoming more and more common in society today. “Addiction affects family functioning. It changes how families relate and the roles that each member plays. The addiction becomes the family’s priority. Insights on family functioning with an addict can be seen through personal stories that tell the experience from one family’s or one teenager’s perspective. Velleman has identified seven areas of family functioning that are impacted by addiction: roles, rituals, routines, finances, communications, conflict and social life.” (Choate, 2015) RESEARCH QUESTION  What role does family play in a child becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol? Importance  Drug addiction has become a common thing in children today and it is up to us as adults to get to the bottom of why our children are turning to drugs. We have to figure the problem. What happened to make them want to do drugs? Literature Review In the article “Adolescent Alcoholism and Drug Addiction: The Experience of Parents.”, the parents discuss how they found out about the substance dependence problem, their experiences as the problems escalated, looking for explanations other than substance dependence, connecting to the parent’s own history, trying to cope, challenges of getting help, impact on siblings, and choosing long-term rehabilitation.” (Choate, 2015) Qualitative Study  In the article, “Adolescent Alcoholism and Drug Addiction: The Experience of Parents.”, The qualitative study uses the participants from a long-term, family-based adolescent rehabilitation program. The study consisted of 31 parents or caregivers of 21 adolescents. Participation in this study was completely voluntary and was not related to any requirements of the treatment center. The interviews were recorded and each one lasted between 45 minutes and 2 hours long. The interviewer asked the parents or care giver questions like: how did they become aware of the drug use in their child, how did they know when their drug use became an addiction, what interventions did they try, and what kind of impact did their child’s drug use have on the family. Experimental Study  In the article, “Familial Risk Factors Favoring Drug Addiction Onset”, an experimental study aimed at the identifying familial risk factors that favored drug addiction onset. The study was carried out from 2008 to 2009. The study consisted of a total of 146 addicts and 134 control subjects. This articles experimental design is the Pretest-Posttest ControlGroup Design because it consists of a group of addicts and a control group that is not addicted to drugs. The study involved a 67-variable questionnaire. The questionnaire was given solely to addicts whose acute therapy had been completed and the addicts were provided with the cover letter containing an explanation of the study purpose and a request for as honest answers as was possible. “Participation in the study and questionnaire fulfilment were voluntary; the addicts reluctant to comply were not forced to do so. The questionnaire was anonymous, without personal data like name, date of birth (only year) etc.) and participants were informed orally and in the written form about all relevant features of study such as aims, methods and means of using data.” (Zimić, & Jukić, 2012) Potential Methods  Some potential methods that I would like to use in my proposal is qualitative and quantitative research. I would like to use both methods because I would want to a variety of studies to better understand my question. Research Design And Rationale  Qualitative design would be the best method for my proposal because I would want to conduct one on one interviews with the drug addicted child, their parents, and their siblings if they have some. I want to get a full account of what each person is experiencing and why. Ethical Issues  Getting informed consent is the most important ethical concern in my study because I would have to let everyone know what and why I am obtaining this private information from them. I would let them know that it is for research purposes and that their names will remain anonymous. I would let them know that it is totally voluntary if they want to participate. Conclusion In conclusion child drug and alcohol addiction is becoming more and more common in society today and it is up to us adults to get to the bottom of what has caused them to turn to drugs, and to find put what role their families had to play in their addiction. Finding out the problem can be a step to the addicted child’s recovery. References  Choate, P. W. (2015). Adolescent Alcoholism and Drug Addiction: The Experience of Parents. Response 1: Pounds
The research question presented in the presentation is appropriate and researchable using
many different research designs because it is not very complex. Mixed Methods Research can
provide detailed insight into different descriptive as well as statistical factors and describe
objective relationships between involved variables. However, in my opinion, a quantita...
