Minerals
1. How do minerals affect society?
Minerals have an impact on the society since they damage the ground while they are
being extracted due to the heavy machines that are used during the process. Minerals also
pollute the environment when they are being processed and also when being disposed of.
We also find that most of the water bodies especially rivers have been contaminated by
minerals especially those that are rich in heavy metals.
2. What is the difference between metallic and nonmetallic minerals? Provide two
examples from each category and discuss their uses.
Metallic minerals are those that can produce a new product once they have been
melted while non-metallic minerals cannot produce a new product upon melting. Metallic
minerals contain metal elements in their chemical formula while non-metallic minerals
do not have metal components in their inorganic chemical make- up and are good
conductors of heat while non-metallic minerals are poor conductors of heat. Examples of
metallic minerals are gold and iron while examples of non-metallic minerals are clay,
diamond, and Mica. The minerals can be used for construction or as jewelry.

Mining
1. How are minerals extracted from the Earth and processed?
Minerals can be extracted depending on the depth of the mineral that is being
extracted. The method of extraction can either be surface or subsurface. Subsurface is
used to extract minerals that are deep into the ground while the surface is used to extract

minerals is used to extract minerals that are on the surface. Minerals are normally
processed through smelting.
2. What are the different ways minerals can be mined? Provide a brief description
of at least three types of mining.
The different ways in which minerals can be mined include placer, open pit and strip.
The open pit is the easiest way of mining...
