Culture Similarities and Differences
Introduction
This is the summary findings of an interview I conducted with a male friend aged 25
years. He is a Christian. He lives with his family in a rented apartment in San Francisco,
California. He is an African American. The interview aimed to determine the similarities and
differences between our cultures and how they impact our thought processes and perceptions
towards various issues in society.
Gender dynamics
From the interview, the cultural gender dynamics had quite a difference from my own
culture. It was depicted that I came from a more feminine society, while his society was more
masculine. This brought out differences in terms of gender dynamics. In their society, men
are expected to be much more competitive, work for material success. They expect women to
serve as well as care for the non-material quality of life and children. It was suggested that
the mother has a weaker position in the family. Their culture strives for a maximum
distinction in how women and men are expected to behave. Men are viewed as being strong,
critical, and adult-like with the needs such as autonomy and dominance, aggression, and
endurance.

overlap of the roles carried out by men and women. The belief in gender equality is more
prevalent in our culture. Our culture offers both genders, especially women, the opportunities
to fulfill various social roles which are related to improved well-being and relationship
satisfaction. However, there was a similar pattern whereby in both cultures, it was the fathers
who were concerned with expressive issues, finances, and childcare.

desire to make an accurate decision, and reduce the effort used in the making of the decision.
This was quite different from our perspective of a methodological decision-making process,
whereby the decision is seen as a goal or an endpoint. To make a decision, an evaluation of
the uncertainties and conseque...
