Discussion 13
Chapter 9 cont.
What are some of the problematic behaviors in school-age children? School age children often
times are, for their first time, experiencing the level of independence that they have never
experienced before. Those with poor impulse control may find themselves in a number of
situations in which they exhibit poor behavior. Aggressiveness and confrontation can occur as
the child is accustomed to only having things his or her way previously, bullying weaker or
younger children, poor eating habits when left to their own devices and not supervised by the
parent, deceptive behavior, in other words lying to authority figures or parents. General antisocial behaviors and adjustment issues as described above. Stealing can become a problem
especially if left unchecked. Kids can fall into this behavior for a number of reasons including:
lack of training and boundary limits when other’s property is concerned, Showing off or buying
friendship, this is indicative of social ineptitude or immaturity and the child lacks self-esteem,
Stealing as a coping mechanism or compensation as previously mentioned, The child may simply
lack self-control and desire, lashing out in a cry for attention from parents or care givers, perhaps
revenge as well.
