Phenomenon of school violence
School violence entails any activity that can generate a disturbance in an educational
institution. It not only includes school shootings, but also physical and verbal altercations. It also
entails bullying via electronic or social media, weapon use, threats, or gang activity. School
violence is not a new issue. It has been acknowledged as early as 1927 when one Andrew Kehoe
set a bomb in a school in Michigan. The bomb killed Kehoe as well as other students and staff.
Individuals who commit school violence attacks entails current and former students, members of
the community, and staff members.
The phenomenon of school violence is studied from various perspectives, comprising the
social/ecological perspective, which states that social contacts play an essential role in creating
and shaping beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. From a social/ecological viewpoint, violet behavior
is an adaptive reaction teenagers make to a specific social context. Moreover, phenomenon of
school violence is also studied from a developmental perspective. This perspective outlines the
effects of personal violence exposure and/or encounters to high magnitudes of violence of
developmental processes. This viewpoint also outlines factors of flexibility arguing that
successful mastery of developmental roles of teenagers can act as a protective influence to stop
violence and enhance health adaptations to life throughout several social settings.
