The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the role of separation pay and
unemployment task in figuring out separation costs. As shown, separation pay is an important
type of separation costs and companies that want to reduce the costs associated with separation
from employees must understand all the aspects related to its costs. Unemployment tax, on the
other hand, is a federal tax that varies according to several variables and the state in which the
company is located may determine the exact value of it.
Separation pay refers to the pay that an employee typically receives after he or she
separates from an employer. For a company, separation pay is registered as a cost. For this
reason what is paid as separation pay is part of the separation costs. Separation pay can be
received when an employee dies, retires, or when the employment contract is terminated. An
employee can also receive separation pay if he quits his job or if the position is eliminated due to
reorganization (Cascio & Boudreau. 2010). On the other hand, employees that leave their
position by becoming consultants or freelancers are not entitled to separation pay. While
