James Gibbons is born in Maryland, Baltimore. His parents were Thomas and Bridget
Gibbons. His parents were from Tourmackeady, County Mayo, Ireland. They settled in the
USA when they migrated from Canada (Shehan & Ellis, 1953).
1839
Thomas Gibbons fell ill with tuberculosis and moved the family back to Ireland with the
belief that the climate there would be favorable to their health. From there, Thomas operated
a grocery store, and James Gibbons was able to attain his early education.
