Marketing objective is to meet the needs of customers and getting value in return. Public relations supports the marketing objective by establishing rapport with customers to find out how customers perceive a product and thereby the company that manufactures that product.
PR does offer value to customers. Customers can relay their concerns about a product issue to the PR group of a company so that the company takes corrective action to alleviate customer concerns. For instance, recently Walmart customers had an issue with the products Walmart was selling in U.S. stores. Customers became aware that the products they were buying were manufactured in sweatshops in foreign countries where children were employed in manufacturing and they directed their concern to Walmart management. As a result, Walmart issued strict guidelines to their suppliers abroad to adhere to these guidelines and apparently the working conditions in these countries have improved since then.
