Convection currents in the liquid mantle power the process of tectonic plate movement, also known as continental drift on a larger scale. The recurring movement of heavy substances rising and cooler substances falling causes the asthenosphere, a thin layer between the crust and the mantle, to constantly move around, consequently shifting tectonic plates. Oceanic crust is heavier than continental crust, and slides under, another cause of continental drift
