After the Civil War, the United States became a much more industrialized society. Between 1865 and 1920, industrialization improved American life in many ways. However, industrialization also created problems for American society. Consider events that took place after the Civil War and discuss ways that industrialization affected the U.S. between 1865 and 1920.

Effects of Industrialization
Industrialization was the main milestone that led to the economic development of the
U.S. Industrialization was accompanied by many advantages to the people though it still had its
negative impacts. In the year 1860, Abraham Lincoln opposed slavery. Therefore, African
Americans became free, though the Jim Crow laws were still exercised primarily in South
America. The Jim Crow laws advocated for segregation between African Americans and the
whites. Industrialization affected the society immensely especially because there were no labor
laws and unions to govern the activities of the new industries. During the industrial revolution
businesses grew and capitalism developed. Therefore, more workers were required in the
industries.
Women and children were therefore employed and subjected to long working hours, and
yet they were only paid low wages enough for them to survive. Women and children were also
subjected to hard tasks that they could not manage leading to immature deaths in the industries.
Children were most preferred because they hardly complained about the low wages and their
small sizes convenient for the small tight fitting machinery which older people could not fit. The

industries released hazardous gasses to the environment where most of the working class lived
endangering their surroundings. The bio- hazards led to infections such as lung diseases. The
working class was not compensated for any accident that occurred in the workplace such as
muscular deformities (Miller, Zeman, Sicius & Girard, 2012). Labour unions were also not
available to curb these problems making the situations worse for the working class
Social classes also emerged during this industrial era this is because there were
capitalism and city civilization. Social classes arose because there existed the owners of means
of production such as land and capital and the employees in return offered labor in the industries.
One Alexander Grey worked the same job of pumping water for twenty years from the age of six
to twenty-six. The social classes included the upper, middle and working classes. The upper and
middle classes lived comfortable lives because the industrial revolution favored them. The
working class, on the other hand, did not benefit much from industrialization because they were
