Stanford Prison Experiment
The Stanford Prison experiment is one of the classic experiments that have ever been
conducted in the field of Psychology. It is a great study that was conducted by Professor
Philip G. Zimbardo concerning the life of criminals in prison. The experiment was a dramatic
simulation of how prison life is and what is constituted in the life of a prisoner who is behind
bars and under constant scrutiny by the prison warders. The experiment itself was conducted
in the year 1971 and its completion saw it providing a graphic illustration of the manner in
which different situations in life do shape individuals into acquiring a new behaviour. In this
essay, I shall discuss the Stanford Prison experiment and outline the purpose of the study. I
shall also shed more light on the ethical principles that were not complied with in during the
study and whether the researcher was justified in not complying with the ethical standards;
not to mention, explain the results that were obtained and analyze whether the results can be
generalized to another population or situation.
To begin with, the Stanford Prison Experiment notably constituted young men who
played different roles to simulate prison life. There 10 young men who played the role of
prisoners and 11 men who played the role of guards, all selected in a very random manner
from a total of 24 college students who were selected from 705 volunteers to partake the
