B.      After reading chapter 10 of your textbook, read the case below and answer the discussion question that follows  Cecilia and Jerry have been in a dating relationship for three years. Jerry is divorced and has two young children who he takes care of every other weekend.  Jerry has expressed feelings of love for Cecilia, but he’s nervous about making another long term commitment.  After three years, Cecelia is ready for a commitment.  She would like to have children of her own and is anxious about “wasting her time” with a man who doesn’t want what she wants.  For a while, Cecelia has been showing her discontent by picking lots of fights about small things. But she does love him and still has hopes for the future. She would like to express her love to Jerry and see if they can deepen their commitment. As a communication coach, you have been asked to help this couple with their relationship challenges.  Based on your own experiences and what you have learned so far about listening, perception, empathy and the five love languages, what advice would you give Cecilia and Jerry, both individually and as a couple to improve their communication with one another? Nonverbal Communication Nonverbal Messages in a Room Space décor communicates a lot to the visitor when entering a room. The decoration and spaces tell the status of the individual or a group of people. The documents, bookshelf, and objects often highlight the status and wealth. Additionally, the decorations speak a lot about the lifestyles and interests. From the space, it is easy to depict the tastes and likes of a person, particularly through space objects such as books, dvds, magazines, all of which communicate what is considered of utmost importance. For example, the executive manager’s office is often spacious and well furnished, then employee’s cubicle desks. Likewise, looking at the artifacts on the wall, the visitor gets the message regarding self-concept. The artifact often carries messages about the collector, such as logos and brand names. It is easy to identify preferences from watches, purses, eyeglasses, and clothes in the room. In essence, artifacts project position or role, gender, status or class, affiliation group membership, and personality. Paying attention to the artifacts in the room, the visitor can sense the host they want to communicate with, thus allowing more accurate adaptation to meet the meet's agenda (Advance Senior Care, 2012). The visitor’s perception might be correctly projected; they may understand likes, preferences, social class, and lifestyles. Items in the room command the host's wealth; hence furniture, decorations, artifacts mounted on the wall provide enough nonverbal communication to the visitor before the meet. Artifacts in the room are physical items often regarded as implicit nonverbal communication devices. They convey the message without the host speaking; hence, the visitor clearly understands who they are meeting and how to approach the host. According to Widodo et al. (2019), “nonverbal communication shows feelings and emotions that cannot be expressed in words.” Yes, probably I might change a few things, perhaps move clothing, jewelry, and some artifacts. The clothing sometimes might not accurately communicate about an individual; some people purchase items spontaneously. Likewise, rusty yet attractive ornamental artifacts collected from the junkyard might lead to mixed messages, moving them to other rooms, such as bedrooms, study rooms, or bathrooms. Question 2 Nonverbal Communication in the movie Stage Coach Using body language and facial expressions, the director communicates popularity and perception of different ideas and characters to give the viewers a greater experience. In the film “Stagecoach” by John Ford, nonverbal communication was used, such as prolonged eye contact and facial expressions are clues. On their journey, Mrs. Mallory’s non-verbal communication shows the travelers' mercurial relationship throughout the journey. The movie's clues help demonstrate and understand Mrs. Mallory’s social class, a woman of standards. In the 1939 film, through body language, the director John Ford highlights actors' traits, which elicit audience sympathy to wish the travelers a safe journey (TCC, n.d.). Additionally, the director portrays in the movie the Native American culture by depicting barbaric manner. The culture is portrayed as evil savage through the deaths. Hence, portraying the Native American race as inferior. In the Stagecoach film, numerous nonverbal communications emerged, including musical cues. Eye contact, facial expressions, and body language. The director used nonverbal to create suggestions, signal change, give the character’s feelings, and be interpreted by the audience. The complementing nonverbal in the movie significantly reveals the commentary of the actors. In the film stagecoach, the director uses nonverbal for as a complementing communication for the audience to get engaged (TCC, n.d.). Mrs. Mallory’s verbal interactions throughout the film scene were limited to nonverbal communication. The facial expressions, gestures, and body language delineate characters' characteristics, emotions, and relationships in specific scenes. Therefore, the director delivers clues and information essential for following the film themes and plot. DQ1- With regard to firearms specifically, police departments in many other nations carry assault rifles and other heavy weaponry as part of their daily activities and on their person. Conversely, American police officers will often only carry their department issued pistol. Why? Does this touch upon any ethical obligations of the police?
