Congressional Ethics
In the recent past, transparency accountability and credibility have taken the course in our
political scene. Therefore, morals and virtues with our society are deemed to of high standards.
Politicians are taken into book on a violation of any law when it comes to matters pertaining
ethics. It is in this regard that the Democrat representative Charlie B Rangel was taken into
account for breach of ethical rules. Rangel was from the state of New York. Despite the
existence of the political divide in the house, that is the democrats and the republicans, the
democrats were not blackmailed by the party affiliations when it came to matters of ethics. Such
actions have led to the loss of credibility in the house.
As a member of the Congress, he was deemed to face the ethics committee in the house
before the case was forwarded to an advanced level. Investigations done showed that Rangel had
committed the following mistakes he failed to disclose his financial affairs to the public hence
creating barriers in undertaking a lifestyle audit; he housed political committees in his
apartments. This was contrary to the New York City rules. Furthermore, Rangel participated in
evading payment of taxes. This is because he failed to pay taxes for his villa based in the
Dominican Republic. He also misused the staff allocated to him in Congress. He raised funds for
the New York College and made one of the college wings named in his honor. He had various
accounts of misconduct which amounted to eleven. The punishment was to either censor him or
expel him. Despite his long service (two decades) to the government under various capacities,
the House of Representatives opted to censor him (Menzel, 2015).
My take on the verdict given to Charlie Rangel is quit too gross. By the offenses that he
had committed he did not deserve such a harsh penalty. However, the fact that he was a
