What is the difference between empirical formula and moleclar formula, in my book it says ch4 is the same moleclar and empirical?

Dec 19th, 2014

Empirical formula of any compound is a formula with the lowest whole number ratio of elements in a compound.

CH4 cannot be divided by any number but 1 for each element - C and H.

Thus, C1H4 is an empirical formula for this compound.

However, we don't usually write C1Hx, thus, the final answer is: CH4

Hope it was helpful to you :)
