Under a Communist government (in theory), all property and means of production are commonly owned, and each person is provided for according to his or her production and need. In reality, however, Communist governments are totalitarian and highly repressive, with no tolerance for individual thought or expression, practice of religion, or the development of private enterprise. Political opposition is also not tolerated under the Communist system.
