Mozart was known to challenge his audiences and society by using satire to help people
understand the folly of society. In the age of enlightenment, traditional standards were being left behind
and free-thinkers were pushing the boundaries of science and the arts. The comic opera, Don Giovanni,
is a satire with farcical overtones in the style of the great French satirist, Moliere. It makes fun of the
aristocracy and the Spanish nobleman Don Giovanni is a buffoon who is a selfish womanizer. He gets
away with it because he is rich and powerful but eventually he must face his demons. It opened the
eyes of the middle class to the foils of the rich and they enjoyed watching this foolish nobleman who
travels around seducing women and is destined for disaster. Don Giovanni is a good example of the
artistic freedoms that characterized the age of enlightenment and the criticism that can often follow.
Don Giovanni reflects the influence of the Enlightenment by detailing the ruin of its aristocratic main
character.
The music at the beginning is very dramatic and suggests it might be a tragedy but later the
