Watch the documentary "brother outsider", then write an essay focusing on some aspect of intersectionality in Brother Outsider, including but not limited to race, gender, sexuality, class, immigrant status. I will send the link to the documentary after we start working. It’s an hour long but you don’t have to watch the whole thing to come up w a response. Also you can just play at times2 speed. Make a point that expresses your idea about the topic. This could take the form of analysis or argument. Use examples from the film to support that point. You can make connections between those sources and your own life/observations. This is not a researched paper, though you are welcome to incorporate information from other sources. These issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality converge to make identity formation difficult. (Consider how those pieces come together in the development of the main character's identity) or (How did Rustin's sexuality inform, enhance, or inhibit his race activism? ). 3-5 pages, double spacing Times New Roman size 12

Intersectionality encompasses the analytical framework employed in understanding how
political and social identities bring about different modes of privilege and discrimination
(Crenshaw, 2017). It connotes the interconnected nature of social categorization, including race,
gender, and race as they apply to groups of individuals. Crenshaw (2017) posits that,
intersectionality creates an interdependent and overlapping system of disadvantage or
discrimination. In the Brother Outsider documentary, Bayard Rustin is presented as the most
fundamental and critical figure in the struggle for black Americans' dignity that most people
have never heard of (Mitchell, 2016). From Rustin's standpoint, he thought his gay identity was
inextricably connected to his identity as a Black man. Nonetheless, Rustin's openness and
willingly disclosing his identity as a gay attracted discrimination from other people and left him
marginalized. Surprisingly, Rustin faced discrimination even from the allies within the civil
rights movement (Mitchell, 2016). Following Rustin's movement's controversy, most workplaces
in the United States apply his narrative as the ultimate catalyst to enhance or rather spark
reflection on inclusion and diversity. Still, Rustin's narrative has been employed in fostering the
bridge-building between the African-Americans and LGBTQ or multicultural ERGs (Mitchell,
2017). The subject to this analysis is exploring Rustin's role as the organizer of the 1963 march
on Washington, mentor alongside his insights on intersectionality.
Brother Outsider is a documentary that reflects the life of social justice warrior Bayard
Rustin. The documentary presents Rustin as an African American LGBT icon while at the same
time highlighting his significant contributions to the civil rights movements (Mitchell, 2017)
