Persons with disabilities often face numerous societal challenges, and their disability
induces unfavorable perceptions and biases in many societies. As a result, the stigma associated
with these conditions deprives disabled people of opportunities that are essential for their social
development and well-being. This essay evaluates the unique ability of sports to surpass the
barriers that people with disabilities face.
Persons with disabilities have ventured into extreme sports such as rugby and American
Football. The Murderball film, released in 2005, presents wheelchair rugby as played by the
USA team consisting of young men, mostly suffering from spinal injuries. The cast talks frankly
about their experiences, including injuries, social experiences, sex lives, love of the game, and
competitiveness. The film documents games between 2002 and the 2004 Paralympic games in
