Assignment 4

Comprises a written reflection essay on your own skills in undertaking an interview with a client (played by a simulated client).

On campus students are required to submit their 1,000 word critical reflection essay on the communication skills demonstrated in the role play assessment one week following your assessment in the tutorial.

Off Campus students are to submit by 18 June, 2021 you are required to submit a 1,000 word critical reflection on the communication skills you demonstrated in role play assessment during the workshops.

The critical reflection can be written in the first person.

In your written assignment, you should focus on:

  • what were you aiming to achieve in the interview? Comment on how well you achieved this (25% of mark);
  • what micro-skills did you demonstrate? What was their impact on the interview? (include examples) (25%);
  • what micro-skills could you have used more effectively? (e.g. What would you not do again?) (20 %);
  • identify future learning/areas for developing your micro skills? How do you plan to develop your micro-skills ? (20%); and
  • literacy, presentation and referencing (at least four academic references to be cited using the Monash Harvard referencing system) (10%).

You must use your textbook by Geldard, Geldard and Yin Foo (2017) to name and discuss the micro skills you have used or wish to develop in your essay.

Sign Out PDF Page 28 of 388 Learning foundation skills 4 When we started to write this chapter it was interesting for us to discover that we had some common ideas and beliefs about how to learn to be an effective counsellor, and we also had some differences in emphasis. We realised that it is important for us to recognise that we are all unique individuals and that we each have our own preferred ways of learning. For David, learning to become an effective counsellor was a long process. During this he was exposed to and absorbed ideas about counselling by undertaking an approved course of study, participating in practical training, and having regular and ongoing contact with the supervisors of his counselling practice. Additionally, he learnt through his own personal experiences when he sought counselling for himself, and through contact with other people who had sought counselling help. Aim of the Interview
I conducted an interview with a client struggling with drug and substance abuse issues. The
purpose of the interview was to meet with the client, understand his perspective towards his drug
abuse problem, evaluate his health and substance abuse problem, identify underlying issues, and
create goals and treatment plan. The first aim of the interview was to help the client understand
the presence of the addiction problem and challenge his unreasonable reasoning behind the
substance abuse problem. At the initial stage of an addiction treatment plan, many patients do
believe they have addiction problem, neither do they understand the primary cause of their
addiction problem (McLellan., 2017). Therefore, it is important to help the client understand the
underlying issues that could be behind the substance abuse problem and why it is difficult to
manage the problem without help.
I exemplarily achieved the primary goal of the interview. To achieve this aim, I created a
warm, gentle and non-judgmental environment to help the client open up about deep lying issues
that could be behind his substance abuse problem. I did this from the knowledge that the body can
be dependent on alcohol or drugs from a physical standpoint but there are psychological and
behavioral issues behind the substance use problem (Gadd et al., 2019). I utilized a friendly
nonjudgmental approach which in turn created a safe environment for my client to open up. I asked
