Career development plan focuses on the short-term and the long-term goals that an
employee has concerning their present and future professional life. It also includes a plan of
experiences, both formal and informal, to help achieve the set goals. A career development plan
is an essential human resource tool because it helps identify strengths and weaknesses and the
knowledge and skills professionals need to achieve realistic future goals.
Short-term and Long-term Career objectives
Career objectives are the goals that one puts in place to direct them in their career
development journey. The set objectives should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic,
and timely. The short-term career objectives are the objectives that are set to be achieved in less
than a year. For example, one of the short-term objectives is to gain a new skill that will help to
keep up with the skill gap owing to technology. Skilled employees are also better placed to gain
promotion and eventually rise through the ranks. The second objective I have outlined is to boost
my networking capabilities. Psychologists have argued on the positive side of enlarging our
connections to improve knowledge and tapping on opportunities. For successful progression
towards attaining identifiable career goals, it is important to improve the capacity to network
