Description

Read Chapter 8 pages 219-233 in your On Course textbook. In this section we will learn about emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is a key factor to reaching your full potential. No matter how academically bright you may be, emotional illiteracy will limit your achievements. In this activity, you will explore your ability to understand your own emotions and recognize them as they are occurring. This ability is the foundation for all other emotional intelligence skills.

Assignment:

  1. In your own words, summarize the four components of emotional intelligence as discussed on page 221 of your On Course textbook. DO NOT just quote what's in the book. I want you to really understand the material and be able to describe the concepts in your own words. It may help to imagine you are speaking to a friend or family member and you are trying to explain what the four components of emotional intelligence are to that person.
  2. Write down the following sentence stems:
    1. I feel angry when...
    2. I feel embarrassed when...
    3. I feel afraid when...
    4. I feel sad when...
    5. I feel calm when...
    6. I feel peaceful when...
    7. I feel happy when...
    8. I feel joyful when...
    9. I feel loved when...
  3. Complete the sentence stems above. Really dive deep and use meaningful examples for your sentence stems. For many people, staying in touch with their feelings is a great challenge. Completing the sentence stems will help you become more aware of your feelings. And being aware of your feelings will help you to better understand their origins. For instance, people will often respond with anger, when they feel embarrassed. If you are emotionally self-aware you can recognize that you're really feeling embarrassed and not angry, so you can better manage your emotions, and perhaps have a meaningful conversation with the person that embarrassed you rather than getting into a heated argument. This way you can maintain healthier, happier relationships in your work, school, and personal life.
  4. Write a short paragraph about the most important thing you learned about emotional intelligence and address how you will use it in your life moving forward
