Psychological Disorders
The four chosen Disorders
The four psychological orders chosen are Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorder,
Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder, and Antisocial Personality Disorder. The main reason for
selecting these psychological disorders was because they are the most prevalent
psychological disorders in many communities. Also, they are often misunderstood and
individuals with these conditions are often stigmatized and treated badly in the community.
Symptoms of these Disorders
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar causes individuals to experience extreme mood swings. The individuals also
show a high sense of euphoria and are self-confident. Also, they experience heightened
energy and activity, and are easily agitated (Coon & Mitterer, 2015).
Anxiety Disorder
The individual is fatigued and has trouble sleeping (insomnia). They are easily
startled and feel nervous often. This makes them very irritable and may tremble or feel
twitchy. Sweating, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, and nausea are also symptoms of this
disorder (Coon & Mitterer, 2015).
Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder
Individuals have problems with uncertainty and are very doubtful. They develop
aggressive and negative thoughts about events beyond their control. They also exhibit
thoughts of self-harm and harming others. Also, they have an obsession with things being
orderly and fear getting dirty or disorganized (Coon & Mitterer, 2015).
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Individuals disregard what is wrong or right. They are very manipulative and use their
charm to manipulate others. They are arrogant and view their needs as being superior to those
3
of others. Have recurring problems with authority. They are hostile, aggressive, irritable, and
do not show empathy. Also, they take impulsive actions and do not plan for the future (Coon
& Mitterer, 2015).
Behavior associated with these disorders
Bipolar Disorder
The individual has extreme mood swings characterized by sudden low and high
moods that fluctuate within short periods. The low mood is characterized by the individual
feeling depressed and suddenly losing interest in activities (Bilge, 2018).
Anxiety Disorder
The individual often has mood swings. They also feel helpless and worthless, which
makes them panic and feel uneasy. They also feel as if they are in constant danger and
dissociate from others. They develop feelings of fear and despair (Bilge, 2018).
Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder
The main behavior manifests are a consistent pattern of being fearful of the future,
which leads to the development of negative thoughts that lead to compulsions. This causes
the individual to be very distressed especially if they cannot control the event or if it deviates
from a pattern (Bilge, 2018).
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Mostly, the behaviors manifest before the individual reaches 15 years. The main
behavior is aggression towards animals and other people, serious and recurrent problems with
authority, and destroying property. They are also dishonest and prefer deceit over the truth
(Bilge, 2018).
How are Families and Other Relations Affected?
Bipolar Disorder
4
The sudden change in moods may be distressing since in a moment, the mood shifts
from being happy to very sad. This makes it hard to relate and form a bond with the
individual. It is also challenging to cope with mood changes (Crits-Christoph & Barber,
2015).
Anxiety Disorder
The feeling of restlessness and tension is extended to the family members and other
relations. This creates tension which affect communication and bonding. Interpersonal
relationships at work are also negatively affected (Crits-Christoph & Barber, 2015).
Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder
People interacting with the individual have to stick to a routine. Any change no matter
how slight is viewed as a disruption and causes a serious problem. This makes it hard to
interact with people who do not know them well (Crits-Christoph & Barber, 2015).
Antisocial Personality Disorder
It increases the probability of risky behavior. Also, the individual is manipulative and
has a problem with authority, which may lead to trouble with the law. Other people will also
shun them due to their manipulative and self-centered behavior (Crits-Christoph & Barber,
2015).
How the disorder affects social interactions
Bipolar Disorder
The constant mood swings make it hard to relate with others since they are only
sociable when in high moods. This makes it hard to develop new relationships since it is
difficult to sustain a friendly social environment for a long. However, it is easy to socialize
when they are in high moods (Kring & Johnson, 2018).
Anxiety Disorder
5
People feel like they are "walking on eggshells" when around the individual. This is
due to the tension. Therefore, many people avoid the individual due to the tension. This
makes it hard to socialize with others (Kring & Johnson, 2018).
Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder
While it is easy to relate with people you understand the person with the condition,
forming new relationships is a problem due to the obsession with routine and control. This
makes it hard to meet new friends (Kring & Johnson, 2018).
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Many people avoid the person once they realize they are manipulative. Also,
considering other people to be inferior and oneself to be superior drives people away.
Generally, people with antisocial behavior tend to be loners (Kring & Johnson, 2018).
How the disorder affects personality
Bipolar Disorder
They constantly have manias and depression, which alternates with periods of stable
moods. Therefore, they often seem to be depressed or hyperactive. This makes them easily
irritable and hence emotionally unstable (Kring & Johnson, 2018).
Anxiety Disorder
They are introverts and often prefer their own company. Therefore, they are not very
sociable due to emotional instability. They will also have low self-esteem (Kring &
Johnson, 2018).
Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder
The person develops a perfectionist personality and is controlling, which makes them
impose their standards on other people. They are very orderly, neat, and organized. Also, they
follow routing at all times (Kring & Johnson, 2018).
Antisocial Personality Disorder
6
Failure by the person to show regard for right or wrong makes them develop a
sociopathic personality. The manipulative nature also makes the person a psychopath. They
also lack empathy (Kring & Johnson, 2018).
Treatment Approaches
Bipolar Disorder
The primary treatment approach is medication. This helps to stabilize the moods.
Also, counseling is used to help the patient control some of the symptoms. However
medication is the most effective treatment...
