Play impacts a child’s development, socialization, learning, and overall well-being. “Children’s play promotes language acquisition and development, strengthens intellectual functioning, builds both social skills and social relationships, decreases stress, and promotes physical aptitude and strength,” (Lundahl & Hull, 2014). When children play, they are being exposed to modeling and activities for advanced learning. Throughout studies, researchers have shown that there are different types of play such as functional play, constructive play, dramatic play, games with rules, and social play. While play is extremely important in development, there can be difficulties for children to be involved in playing. “Earlier hypotheses posited that children from disadvantaged backgrounds may not have the modeling or resources to engage in as much cooperative play,” (Lundahl & Hull, 2014). Socioeconomic status can play into the effect of what is available for the children to play with. An individual who lives in a great school district will have a playground at school with many different areas of equipment to play with, while lower income schools might only have a field and a basketball net. Playgrounds and schoolyard environments influence play behaviors of young school-aged children."
