Watson’s Theory of Human Caring
The practice of nursing is interested in promoting health, caring for sick people, restoring
health and preventing illness. In other words, nursing focuses on diseases’ treatment and health
promotion. According to Jean Watson who developed the theory of human caring, caring is key
to the practice of nursing and supports health better than ordinary medical cures. She argues that
an all-inclusive approach to care is the core of the nursing caring practice. According to the
human caring theory, nurses can demonstrate and practice caring (Wei & Watson, 2019). This
caring can promote growth and improve patient and nurse outcomes.
Components of the Theory
Watson defined three metaparadigm nursing concepts in her theory. These include the
human beings or persons, nursing and health. She referred to human beings as valued persons to
be taken care of, nurtured, respected, assisted and understood (Ozan & Okumuş, 2017). A person
is considered to be greater than as well as different from a collection of his or her body parts.
Health is described as the highest level of physical, social and mental functioning. It’s the
absence of disease or the existence of efforts resulting in the lack or absence of disease. Nursing
is defined as a science of health-disease experiences mediated by personal, professional, ethical
and scientific care interactions (Ozan & Okumuş, 2017). Watson did not define the last
metaparadigm concept (that is, environment) but rather developed ten carative factors necessary
to the caring experience that requires to be managed by all nurses when providing care to
patients (Ozan & Okumuş, 2017).
