The universal Model of Leadership
Introduction
Leadership model is a guide that suggests specific leadership behaviors use in a specific
environment or situation and most often represented graphically to show the required leadership
behavior. There are different leadership models just to mention but a few; the universal
leadership model, the situational leadership model, and the functional leadership model.
The universal leadership model is a complex and elegant framework that has been designed to
deal with the complex task of developing future leaders. We must note that the business
environment of the 21st century has changed and as a result, we need to increase the pace of
developing leaders who are up to the task. The model believes that leaders are developed in a
chain of chronological phases that are universal and invariant and anyone who ignores this
narrative is equivalent to jeopardizing the organizational transformation efforts in developing the
21st-century leaders. The stages of leadership are interdependent with the design and
effectiveness of the System design and effectiveness. These stages are, egocentric, reactive,
creative, integral and unitive.
Under the egocentric, we are identified by our ability to satisfy our needs. At this level our
desires are key and we interact with others to get our desires satisfied. At this point, other needs
and expectations are taken into account. A leader who does not transition from this stage tends to
be autocratic and controlling. The next stage is the reactive leaders who try to create the ability to
hold their desires and the desires of others concurrently. The leader learns the rules of the
organization to meet the expectations. One gains knowledge to master the means of succeeding
in a chosen field. Leaders at this level mostly care so much about their employees, manage and
function as compassionate parents. The organization that emerges with such kind of leadership is
a large, efficient structure with lots of bureaucracy with a political climate that requires loyalty
and obedience. The third stage is the creative stage where the majority of the efforts and attempts
are geared towards creating a culture of creativity that is leaner, agile ...
