The Social Learning Theories

The social learning theories suppose that the behaviors of parents and other significant
people in the growth of children shape the idea of the children about what is appropriate behavior
and what is not. Therefore, during growth, the children infer the principles or rules through
repeated or constant exposure to particular styles of upbringing. Hence, children whose social
origin handled stressful issues with violence and anger are at risk of exhibiting such aggression
in their adult lives. The family does not only introduce the children to the different techniques of
violence but also provide the approval of violence as a behavior (Bandura & Walters, 1977).

Unlike the theory of award and punishment, the social learning theory does not involve
awarding or punishing individuals for them to learn the behaviors they acquire (Bandura &
Walters, 1977). Therefore, their habits are acquired purely by observation. The main hypothesis,
in theory, is that the intergenerational violence is obtained through interaction with adults that
show the behavioral patterns. Therefore, the learners are usually either victims or witnesses of
the behaviors they acquire. Therefore, for instance, if their parents violently discipline children,
they may develop the mentality that buttering children is appropriate. If children witness their
parents hitting one another, they may have a high propensity of hitting their partners in their
marriages later in life. It should also be understood that social learning theory has a bearing in
the high youth delinquency cases in some places as compared to others. Therefore sociologists
use the theory to explain to explain some cases of criminal behavior among some neighborhoods
