Abstract

The dark web, as its name suggests has been strewn in secrecy and ambiguity since its
formation to date where it has gained a high level of preeminence. From drug peddlers to forces
in opposition to ruling regimes, it has become a run to place for many and as such has also
gained the attention of law enforcement officers. Its secrecy lends it to become a favorite for
persons and organization desiring to remain anonymous and hidden in the shadows where the
rule of the game is that anything goes. This paper will therefore attempt to explore the intricacies
of the dark web by looking at its history and its ultimate connection to e-commerce, most of
which as will be shown, is mudded by trade in contrabands and illegal content.

Definition

Dark net is made up of websites which are encrypted and are not available on normal
search engines but are accessible through networks such as Invisible Internet Projects (I2P) and
The Union Router (Tor) (Chen, H. et. al., 2008). Tor-accessible sites and browsers are commonly
used among the users of dark net hence can be known by the term "union." I2P enables the
hosting of anonymous websites while Tor allows the accessibility to the internet anonymously.
The encryption system has allowed the dark net users not to be tracked in terms of their location
and identities due to their anonymity. This kind of technology uses data of the users through
