Addiction is a chronic disorder that can impact multiple dimensions of a person's life.
More than 20.7 million Americans required treatment for substance use disorders but only 2.5
million accessed specialized treatments (American Addiction Centers, 2021). Although
numerous treatment approaches for substance use disorder exists, they are complex because they
require significant time and repeated care for a full recovery. The treatment outcomes are
designed to help individuals stop depending on and using the drugs and become productive
people in society, at work, and in society. There is no single treatment most appropriate for all
people and, the interventions are customized according to the unique conditions of an individual.
The following project describes the general overview of commonly utilized approaches for
substance used disorder treatment.
Brief Description of the Treatments
Cognitive behavior therapy (CBP) is among the evidence-based and widely used
treatment approaches for substance use disorders. The approach integrates various cognitive and
behavioral interventions (Naar & Safren, 2017). It involves helping the clients learn, recognize,
and change their maladaptive behaviors and founded on helping them adopt coping skills and
identify risky situations, avoid them, and manage relapse. The skills that individuals learn in this
treatment approach have long-term benefits after the initial therapy in managing co-occurring
physical or mental health issues.
