Q Paper 3 This q paper is based on the article “Frame Alignment Processes” by Snow et al. (1986) as well as our discussion on research concepts. Answer these three questions: 1) What are frame amplification, frame bridging, and frame extension? (briefly define these processes using your own words) 3 pts. 2) Provide your own example of frame amplification or frame extension and explain how this specific framing proces can aid in mobilization of a social movement (you can use any social movement or social movement organization to illustrate your point). 4 pts. 3) Come up with a research question that deals with some aspect of a social movement. Convert this question into a hypothesis. Identify the independent and dependent variables. 3 pts. Remember that your research question should deal with an aspect of a social movement (membership or ideology or strategy tactics, etc.) and not about the specific issue the movements advocates for or against. For example: “How effective is gun control in stopping violent crime?” is a question that does not deal with a social movement, it deals with an issue of “gun control.” “Are the tactics of the gun control movement effective in gaining public support for the movement’s goals?” is a question about a specific aspect of the social movement for gun control.

expansion of a movement’s frame (i.e. they broaden their range of core ideas and values).
Frame Bridging: The linkage of immobilized individuals or groups to social movements,
which are structurally unconnected, yet ideologically harmonious. Individuals or groups may
lack the means to pursue their interests but connecting with SMOs creates stronger movements.
Frame Extension: A movement’s action of extending their frame to incorporate concerns that
are not salient to their main objectives but are salient to prospective supporters. The movement
displays its objectives as being congruent with the views of prospective supporters, by
promoting them through stating their supportive stance or participating in their activities.
2: Frame Extension Example - How can Frame Extension Mobilize a Social Movement?
General example: The Black Lives Matter movement supporting the Gay Rights movement.
Personal example: Movements at my previous school – the Young Leaders (advocates equal
opportunity for the disabled) and the Wing of Hope (advocates equal opportunity ...
