Description

For this discussion you will present the facts of the case and the conclusions that you have drawn from them. You will then get to see if others investigating the same case and the same evidence are in agreement with your analysis of the evidence and your conclusions.

Post Requirements:

This assignment requires two posts, each completed individually.

First Post - Due Thursday

  1. What is your hypothesis for who committed the murder? What do you think happened to Chelsie Vapolt?
  2. What evidence do you have from the timeline, autopsy, hair analysis, body fluids, blood, and DNA to support this?
  3. What evidence do you have from the timeline, autopsy, hair analysis, body fluids, blood, and DNA that may point to a different suspect(s)?
  4. What facts of the case are you certain of? Which do feel might be true, but lack evidence to support them?

Second Post - Due Sunday

Please read the posts and choose one classmate's post to which to respond. Try to respond to someone that hasn't yet received a response.

  1. Do you have the same hypotheses for who committed the murder? If not, what is your hypothesis?
  2. Analyze their evidence and facts. Which ones do you agree on? Which ones (if any) do you disagree on? For full credit, explain your reasoning.
  3. Choose one piece of evidence. What is a potential innocent or alternate explanation, other than murder, for this evidence to have been found where it was?

Example: The suspect owns an orange cat and an orange cat hair was found on the victim's coat. However, the victim's neighbor also owns an orange cat. Therefore, the cat hair could have been from the neighbor's cat.

CSI Part 2 - Evidence Analysis Taoning Zhang Pasadena City College Question 1 The Evidence #1 is from fake fur (synthetic). The slide shows lack of medulla which is the prominent feature of fake fur. On comparing the main slide with other slides, the main slide did not have any medulla and cutin which are same features as in the slide for fake fur. This is how I reached to the conclusion that the slide is for fake fur. Question 2 The species is cat. The slide shows rounded, ball-shaped medulla which is same as that of cat hairs slide. On comparing the main slide with other slides, the main side had small, rounded, ball-shaped medulla which are the same as observed in the slide for cat. This is how I reached to the conclusion that the slide is for cat. Question 3 The species is human. The slide has tidbits, thin pieces of medulla which is present in human slide. On comparing the main slide with the other slides, the main slide had small, tidbits of medulla which are the same as observed in the slide for human. This is how I reached to the conclusion that the slide is for human. Question 4 Evidence #4, Evidence #5 and Evidence #9 contain body fluids. This is because they glow when UV lights falls on them. UV light test is used to detect body fluids such as blood, urine during forensic investigations. The fluid part glows in the presence of UV light. The pictures of abovementioned evidences showed glowing part. This is how I reached to the conclusion that they contain body fluids. Question 5 Evidence #6 and Evidence #7 contain blood. These pieces of evidence showed positive for Kastle-Meyer test which happens when blood (more specifically haemoglobin) is present. The positive and negative controls were included so that the results can be paced in contrast to each other for proper conclusion. Question 6 1. Yes, the following lanes match with each other. * 2 and 4 * 3 and 6 * 7, 8, 9 and 10 These lanes have same fragments of DNA when compared with each other so they match with each other. 2. The following lanes each other because when restriction enzyme is applied, DNA is converted into fragments and it gets spread on the sheet on the basis of charge during electrophoresis. So the lanes match each other because the fragments separated on the basis of charge occupy the same place as that of matching DNA. Question 7 Based on the information from evidence analysis, Dave Vapolt is the prime suspect. Yes, this is the same suspect I had last week. Evidence #4, #5 and #7 supports my hypothesis. Dave attacked his wife and killed her. In her desperate struggle, she torn a piece of cloth from Dave’s shirt as in Evidence #4. Dave later changed his shirt and put the torn one in the closet as in Evidence #5. Yes, evidence #7 refute this. The rock shows the blood of Dave Vapolt on KastleMeyer test which is a bit confusing as someone else present at the scene at that may have hit him which does not seem to be the case so, most probably Dave hit himself with the rock in regret for killing his wife. CSI Part 1 - Case File and Autopsy Taoning Zhang Pasadena City College Question 1: Character web Dave Vapolt, male, 32 years old (Chelsie’s husband) Ani Lopez, female, 57 years old (mother) Katelyn Fairchild, female, 56 years old (housekeeper) Chelsie Vapolt (Victim) Hailey Perkins, female, 31 years old K e n i s h a Lopez, female, 24 years old (dog sitter/suspected to be Dave’s lover) Rami Patel, male, 42 years old (Neighbor) Garrett Wong, male, 29 years old (Exboyfriend) Question 2: Events timeline Event Date and time Chelsie and Wong’s call February 26, 2001, at 20:02 Insurance policy changes February 26, 2001, at 21:00 Mr. Vapolt’s arrival at home February 26, 2001, at 21:45 Dog barking along Vapolt’s fence February 26, 2001, at 22:00 Chelsie’s mother call February 26, 2001, at 22:04 911emergency call February 26, 2001, at 23:15 Death announcement February 27, 2001, at 01:32 Question 3 According to the autopsy, there were several abnormalities noted. The presence of slight signs of rigor mortis in the fingers and jaw, livor mortis, and blanching are the common abnormalities experienced after the autopsy. Such signs are considered to start developing some hours after the death of an individual (Madea, 2015). The presence of organic material from the victim’s hair is also an abnormality. It is considered that the rate of decomposition after a death varies depending on the environment of the dead body. The presence of organic matter in the victim's hair indicates that the dead body had stayed in the water for some time before the police arrived. According to the autopsy results, strangling may be the cause of death. This situation is associated with fractures in the victim's hyoid bone, which indicated recent trauma. Question 4 Based on the information recorded from the people interviewed and the recorded information about the victim, Dave Vapolt is the prime suspect. According to the evidence provided, anger pushed him to cause the death. The source of anger is associated with his wife's reconciliation with her ex-boyfriend, divorce intentions by his wife, and transfer of insurance policy beneficiary from him to the victim's mother. Reference Madea, B. (Ed.). (2015). Estimation of the time since death. CRC Press.

Post 1
What is your hypothesis for who committed the murder? What do you think happened to
Chelsie Vapolt?
Hypothesis: Dave is the perpetrator of Chelsie’s murder.
Based on the autopsy report Chelsie was strangled to death and then taken to the pool.
What evidence do you have from the timeline, autopsy, hair analysis, body fluids, blood, and
DNA to support this?
This aspect is evident through the fracture observed on her hyoid bone, which showed aspects of
trauma and the lack of water in her lungs. This situation shows that she was killed before she was
drugged into the pool. The majority of evidence obtained from the people interrogated, the autopsy,
and the scene all add to the same conclusion. the timeline o events that preceded the death of
Chelsie shows the leading cause of her death and the time the murder was executed. Chelsie's
insurance policy transfer from her husband to her mother, the intentions to secure a divorce, and
her reconciliation with her ex-boyfriend directly affect her husband. This aspect was the leading
cause of the problem. Anger was identified as the primary motive that made Dave execute the
murder. The murder i...
