Representation of women in Armenian Literature
Different literature books between the eighteenth and twentieth century brought out
portrayed the diverse ways in which women were treated in societies. Their different roles
and what status they held in their different communities were portrayed through works of
literature. Armenian literature played in a role in bringing out how life was for women in the
past. Their gender roles were explained, and what they were allowed to do and not do.
Moreover, they explain the way some of the activities that women did in the past have
evolved over time. As readers, we are able to see the women being more accommodated in
daily activities which seemed like taboos in the ancient past.
In Armenian literature books, we see that women had their own assigned gender roles.
They were expected to stay at home and take care of their homes. They were not allowed to
go to work and anything contrary to this was highly shunned. They were dependent on the
men to provide for everything while they sat back at home and took care of their children. In
the story called Armenissa, this character is depicted in the main character, Armenissa. She is
depicted to be a powerful woman who commanded respect from her servants. She carried
herself with so much grace and elegance. She was the envy of many, since she was very
reserved. Although she lived such a lifestyle, surrounded with money and servants, she did
nothing for a living. Her life was funded by an old man, who is described in the story as short
and heavy appearing to be in his fifties. She always went to wait for him by the casino every
time he came to the Greek Island.
The stay at home tradition for women is also illustrated in the story The Bride by
Zabel Asadour. The story centers around five characters, Arshag Ardzatian, who was a young
businessman, Mrs. Dirouhi his mother, Miss Hanumig his sister and Arousiag, his wife.
Arshag went to work every day in order to fend for his family, while the ladies stayed at

home doing household duties. He gave his mother one hundred sovereigns a month to take
care of the house, and paid for his wife’s extra expenses. When his mother came complaining
to him, he was willing to give more. He said “You say you are denying yourselves. Tell me if
you need more.” Furthermore, women did not handle business affairs in the ancient Armenia,
even if the business was family owned. When Arshag pretended to be in debt and asked
Hanumig and Dirouhi for assistance, Hanumig said, “We are women. We cannot meddle into
business affairs.” Her statement is a confirmation that women had their place in the society
that they were not supposed to act against.
Additionally, ancient Armenia dictated t...
