Crisis and Renewal
The growth of a society is slow and sometimes painful due to terrible suffering. The year
1050-1450 saw great suffering, death, and collapse of various societies and their rise. The first
form of suffering was the Crusades, which caused wars between Christians and Muslims in
Europe. The Crusades resulted in an increase in power for the pope, which ensured the Latin
form of Christianity was widespread in Europe.
Apart from the Crusades, the Mongols were also known to spread terror to the people of
Eurasia. The Mongols were famous for causing a war between the Urban and Agrarian
populations. East Asia was also not spared in the religious clashes resulting in poverty (Smith,
Mieroop, Glahn & Lane, 2018). Despite the suffering, the various societies eventually rebuilt.
People were not the only source of calamities during the historical era. The Black Death
was a disease that saw the death of many people, eventually affecting societal development. The
most affected regions were Europe and the Islamic world of the Middle East (Smith et al., 2018).
The deaths and suffering, however, strengthened religious beliefs in both Christianity and Islam.
The various religious fractions promoted their beliefs by providing aid to those affected by the
calamities, which increased the people’s faith.
