Usually, police body cameras are tiny body cameras often worn by police officers on their torso, helmets, or shoulders to record any interactions between law enforcement officers and civilians (Guzik 65). Notably, the policy body cameras are designed with a small microphone to capture any sounds. The body cameras also have internal data storage used to store file footage for future review. The use of body-worn cameras has changed and influenced how the police engage with the rest of the community. The Bureau of Justice argues for police body cameras as a tool of transparency and accountability (Guzik 64). While some people argue for using body cameras, opponents argue against body cameras, deeming them an invasion of privacy. The use of police body cameras, notwithstanding, remains a contentious issue because of split opinion among the public and law enforcement officers. Without a doubt, police officers should be required to wear body camera because it enhances accountability, transparency, documents evidence, improve community relations, and deters illegal, improper and unprofessional behaviors from the police officers and members of the public. Law enforcement officers should be mandated to have body cameras to increase transparency and accountability. In the recent past, many people have come forward and presented their allegations against police harassment. According to Paulsen, body-worn cameras should be worn to exonerate the police officers from false claims (1). Ideally, police Berhanu 2 body-worn cameras would be a significant avenue that would help the police officers exonerate themselves against false claims from the public or their fellow workmates in the police force. The police officers ought to wear body cameras because the cameras will record their interactions with the public, and in case of any altercations, the video evidence will exonerate them. Besides, a significant number of police departments have welcomed the idea of body cameras to enhance accountability and transparency. Many federal funds have already been channeled towards the purchase of body cameras (Paulsen 2). Wearing body cameras will protect the public and the police officers from wrongful or falsified accusations, either way. Therefore, it is only fair and appropriate to require the police force to wear boy cameras when in the line of duty. Without a doubt requiring police officers to wear body-worn cameras while on duty holds them accountable for their actions and behavior (Guzik 65-66). According to Maskaly et al., body cameras should be a mandatory requirement of all law enforcement officers to positively influence their actions and behaviors (11). When body-worn cameras are made a requirement for police officers, the cameras will lower the officers' misconduct while increasing legitimacy. In the current times, many cases of police brutality and excessive force have sufficed; therefore, the solution to ending police violence and holding every officer accountable for their actions calls for the mandatory use of body-worn cameras. Opponents of this technology in modern-day policing will question its legitimacy; however, using body-worn cameras will foster an atmosphere of good conduct among law enforcement entities. Video recordings or video evidence has increasingly become a common practice in the criminal justice system. As such, mandating the law enforcement personnel to have body-worn cameras should not be a debatable issue. Wearing suspect interrogations and eyewitness interviews are often recorded; similarly, body cameras can effectively record interviews and suspect interrogations (Coleman). When the officers are legally required to wear the body Berhanu 3 cameras, the recorded evidence would be admissible. It can be used in the court of justice to corroborate various evidence used to pass judgment against the suspect and put them behind bars. Mandatory interrogations of police encounters with civilians, police interrogations, and interviews would be an excellent way to obtain sufficient evidence needed to acquit or incarcerate a suspect. Not too long ago, many unprofessionalism and inappropriate actions and behaviors have been witnessed among the police officers. White police officers tend to use extreme force on people of black descent. African Americans often detail their horrific encounters in the hands of the officers because of the violence, abuse and discrimination meted on them (Smykla et al. 425-426). Therefore, using body-worn cameras across all police departments in the country decrease police brutality. Besides, body cameras capture events as they happen in realtime. Implementing mandatory use of body cameras will assess and detail the nature of events as they happened in real-time, thus improving community-police interactions and relationships. To a great extent, making it a requirement for police to wear body cameras will deter any form of unprofessional conduct (Smykla et al. 433). Even when critics claim that the body cameras invade the officers' privacy and are costly to acquire, the police should not have anything to hide from the public if they are doing their jobs right. Besides, the federal government provides funding for the acquisition of body cameras. For the common good, taxes should be used to purchase as many body cameras as possible for every police department. Conclusion As outlined earlier, law enforcement entities should be required to wear body cameras while in the line of duty. These body cameras foster accountability and transparency in the police force. Besides, using body-worn cameras will ensure that that the police officers remain professional. Body-worn cameras would be an ideal tool for deterring unprofessionalism and Berhanu 4 unethical conducts among police officers. As mentioned previously, police officer should be mandated to have body cameras to enhance public confidence and improve community relationships. Imperatively, body-worn cameras will reduce cases of police violence and provide video evidence for criminal proceedings. Berhanu 5 Work Cited Coleman, Ronald J. ENGL 1301 Instructions for Argumentative Research Essay Assignment Description The objective of the argumentative research essay is to investigate an important issue or problem in today’s world and take a stance in the debate surrounding the issue. Your task is to make a claim about a debatable topic and to persuade the reader to accept your claim. For this assignment, you must choose one of the following questions: • • • • • • • Should the federal minimum wage be increased? Should college athletes be paid for their participation in college sports? Should there be mandatory minimum sentences for drug related crimes? Should police officers be required to wear body cameras? Should the U.S. government provide free higher education? Should the U.S. government provide free health care for all? Should single-use plastic (packaging, utensils, grocery bags) be banned from use? The essay you write is to be both informative and persuasive. This means that you are expected to fully report on the topic and to stake a position in relation to it. Your essay must therefore proceed from a clear thesis statement (a clearly stated claim, assertion or proposition). You will support and defend your thesis with information and evidence gathered in your research, so be sure to examine your topic from various perspectives and carefully consider the controversies or debates that might surround it. Your paper must be written so that it is convincing even for a skeptical audience. Your essay must therefore include a counterargument—a view that is different from your own. In various lessons, you may see words like opposing viewpoint, opposition, objection, and naysayer; these are all terms for a counterargument. When you insert a counterargument into your argument essay, you are essentially making a preemptive strike by anticipating objections that an opposing side might bring up and exposing their weaknesses. Your essay must also then include a refutation. A refutation or rebuttal is a paragraph that comes after the counterargument and disproves it. In other words, the refutation paragraph explains why the opposing view (counterargument) is incomplete, problematic, or simply wrong. Steps to take: 1. Begin by brainstorming ideas Think carefully about the choices above. What are your initial thoughts on each issue? In what ways might these be debatable or controversial? What do you know about each issue? What do you not know and would have to conduct research to find out? Once you have decided which question you will select, try to narrow even further by considering the debates related to the topic and reflecting on the differing viewpoints and perspectives on the issue. Once you have a clear and narrow focus (or perhaps even a tentative thesis), you can begin doing research. 2. Conduct Research Begin by accessing the Richland College library databases http://www.richlandcollege.edu/library/. One of the best resources there is Academic Search Complete. Sources You are required to have a minimum of five sources for this research project. Your sources should be of diverse types. To help you achieve this, you are required to have at least two newspaper articles and one scholarly journal article. Note that these can all be accessed through the Electronic Databases in our library. Be sure to record the details about every source you find (authors, titles, publication places and dates, page numbers, etc.) for the Annotated Bibliography and your Works Cited list. Annotated Bibliography: An Annotated Bibliography is merely a standard Works Cited list that includes a brief description and/or evaluation of each source cited. Your Annotated Bibliography shows what resources you have consulted and how useful they have been. NOTE: This is a separate assignment, and you will be provided with instruction and guidance on how to develop an Annotated Bibliography withing the research unit. Refer to the Course Calendar for the specific due date. 3. Write Your Argumentative Essay As you draft your essay, but sure it contains all of these elements: • An introduction. This first paragraph provides context for the reader; it should include general information about the topic being addressed as well as the more specific concerns or issues to be examined as part of the debate. You introduction should also include your thesis statement. • A thesis statement. This sentence should be direct and make clear your position or stance in the debate. • At least three supporting claims/points for the thesis. Be sure to organize your essay around the concerns and/or supporting claims, and not around authors or articles. • At least one counterargument (i.e., a naysayer voice or an opposing viewpoint) • At last one refutation of a counterargument (i.e, a rebuttal) • Focused and well-organized paragraphs with clear topic sentences. Each topic sentence should offer a claim that addresses a specific concern and functions to support the thesis. • In-text (parenthetical) references to any sources directly quoted or paraphrased. • • A clear concluding paragraph. A Works Cited page listing your sources Minimum Requirements • Approximately 5 pages, not including the Works Cited page • A minimum of 5 credible sources • An interesting and informative title • A clear thesis statement • At least one counterargument and one refutation • MLA format with in-text citations and a Works Cited entry
