Q1: Reactions to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED Talk
Adichie's TED Talk has enabled me to view things from different viewpoints. What
touched me was when Adichie told the audience about a tale her mother told her about Fide's
family being hungry until Adichie's family came to see him. Adichie was amazed that his mother
could create a basket after hearing about the family's poverty and assuming they couldn't buy
anything. This is significant because Adichie now gets access to Fide's side of the tale. She grew
up reading British and American children's novels, which aided her in picturing the conventional
Caucasian with blue eyes and blond hair. Adichie also discusses how African Americans were
offended by John Locke's portrayal of them as "People with No Heads." This is an example of
someone being judged entirely on their religious beliefs, physical appearance, and cultural
heritage (Andichie, 2009).
I firmly believe we began watching this TED Talk video to comprehend the broader
picture better and avoid being blinded by our own opinions...
