Put yourself in the role of parent, teacher and juvenile justice judge and then in each role identify why it would be necessary to understand the cognitive/moral stage from which a child is operating. Piaget's model of cognitive development has been widely used by educators to develop appropriate curricula for our school-aged children.  As the child matures and passes through the cognitive milestones they develop new ways of thinking.  The acquisition of symbolic capacity allows the child to begin to understand language and this accelerates their cognitive development.  The egocentric thinking of preoperations will eventually give way to logical reasoning.  Problem-solving strategies advance from primarily trial and error to hypothetical and deductive.  Kohlberg's Model of Moral Development provides us with a framework to understand the child's understanding of right vs. wrong as they progress from a heteronomous moral code to one that is autonomous.  Both cognitive and moral development would be important considerations for a parent, a teacher and a judge.  Be sure to address all aspects of the assignment in your initial post.

As a parent, teacher, as well as juvenile justice judge, it is very critical to understand the
stage a child or individual is passing through in their development to be able to understand their
behaviors. Understanding the stage of the child or individual in the cognitive/moral stage is very
critical as it helps understand their behaviors and decide the best way to handle them without
being too hard on them. A parent should familiarize themselves with the various stages of the
cognitive/moral development model to understand the development processes their children go
through and also understand why they behave in a given manner (Kohlberg, 1985). A teacher
should also understand the development stages in order to help the children to fully transform
from one stage to another. The juvenile justice judge should also understand the stage the child is
undergoing to understand the reasons for behaving in a given manner especially after committing
a crime.
Pre-conventional level
Kohlberg identifies four stages of moral development that children must undergo as part
of their development process from childhood to adulthood. The first level identified by Kohlberg
in his theory is the pre-conventional morality the first level that constitutes of children below the
age of nine years and slightly above. In this stage, there is lack of a personal moral code and the
morals and standards of this group is influenced as well as shaped by the close adults. The
associated consequences of failing to abide by the rules determine the moral standards portrayed
at this level. It is clearly evident that a child acting at this stage is unaware of his/her and the
consequences of the actions as well (Kohlberg & Hewer, 1983). There are two stages in this
level; stage one and two. Stage one is the Obedience and punishment orientation a stage that is
characterized by a child’s behavior that involves acting and behaving in a good manner to avoid
the associated punishment. The second stage is the individualism and exchange stage the stage at

which children begin to understand that there is not only a single right view of life but the
perception of right vary from one person to another.
As a parent, it is critical to understand this stage as children at this stage are young and
are not able to effectively understand what is regarded right and wrong but tend to emulate the
behaviors of those around them. As a result, parents should behave in such a manner to act as
role models for their children as the children look up to them and copy their ways of life and
emulate them as their moral principles. Teachers should also understand this level in order to act
as role models for the children too and also understand how to handle them and propel them to
copying only the behaviors that are regarded right and help them drop alternative behaviors that
are considered wrong (Kohlberg, ...
