Title of Paper with Major Words Capitalized
Begin your introduction here. Be sure to double-space throughout the paper. In the
introduction, you should present your thesis statement and the purpose of the paper. Your
preview statement should be the last sentence in the introduction. In the preview statement, list
the main section of the body of the paper. Your instructor may want you to use headings to break
up the main points of the paper. In that case, use the headings listed below.
First Heading in Bold
The body of your paper should be organized into several sections. Remember to cite your
sources in APA style within the text of your paper, including both quotations and paraphrased
content. If you paraphrase from a source, cite it like this (Bertel, 2016). We recommend limiting
the number of direct quotes and paraphrasing as much as possible to demonstrate you understand
the research. However, if you choose to include a direct quote, the next sentence shows you how
to cite that. “This study found that SNS users’ privacy concerns did not significantly affect their
problematic SNS use” (Chen & Kim, 2013, p. 810). Notice that page numbers are required in intext citations only when citing direct quotes, not when citing paraphrased content. When you cite
a work with three or more authors, list the first author’s name followed by “et al.” each time, like
this (Mudrick et al., 2016).
First Subheading in Bold
Although not required, if you choose to further divide a major section into parts, use this
level heading. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah.
Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah.
Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah.
Blah blah blah.
3
Remaining Main Points Headings
Each remaining section of the paper uses this type of heading. Blah blah blah. Blah blah
blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah
blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah.
Conclusion
In the conclusion, begin with a one-sentence summary (list) of the body’s main points.
Then, restate your thesis. Include any additional comments you have in the conclusion.

For this application assignment, you will have a 10-20 minute conversation with someone you perceive as having a different cultural background from your own in order to discover more about the person's family.
Prepare a short list of interview questions prior to your discussion. You may wish to ask questions such as the ones that appear below:
• Who are the members of your family? (Remember: Everyone defines their family in different ways. Allow the interviewee to determine who is considered a part of his or her family.)
• How do family members interact with one another?
• Does your family talk with one another a lot? Are children encouraged to talk with parents? (This question taps into the conversation dimension.)
• Do parents expect that all members of the family will have similar opinions on issues? (This question taps into the conformity dimension.)
• Can you tell me a story that is told over and over in your family?
• Is there anything else you would like me to know about your family, for this assignment?
As you conduct the interview, please be mindful of and try to practice the four dimensions of intercultural communication competence -- i.e., knowledge, understanding, acceptance, and skills (see Chapter 12, pp.
385-389). You should also be certain to thank the person for his or her time. Please direct the person to contact me should she or he have any questions about the assignment.
After conducting the brief interview, you will then write a 3-4 page, double-spaced paper that follows the general format outlined here:
• You should begin with an introductory paragraph that identifies your primary topic and preview the paper's main points.
• Next, in approximately one paragraph, identify the first name of the person you talked with and explain why you believe that the person's cultural background is different from your own. You should
also explain how you know or met the person and provide the general details of the interview (e.g., date, location, timing, etc.).
• In the following section, you should describe what you learned about the other person's family, using concepts from the textbook to illustrate your discussion (see, in particular, Chapter 13). You should
also compare and contrast the interviewee's family and your own family from a communicative standpoint. Please use specific examples from the interview and your own life to support your claims.
• In your third main section, you should reflect on your own intercultural competence while conducting the interview. More specifically, you should illustrate how you engaged in or demonstrated the four
dimensions of intercultural competence (see Chapter 12, pp. 385-389) -- citing examples from your interaction with the interviewee.
Finally, you will conclude your paper by summarizing its main points and providing any final reflections on the activity.
• I'd also like you include a list of your interview questions at the end of the paper (i.e., after your reference page).
