Description
Read the three excerpts from Chapter 5 of Frankenstein.
1. It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs.
2. Mingled with this horror, I felt the bitterness of disappointment; dreams that had been my food and pleasant rest for so long a space were now becoming a hell to me; and the change was so rapid, the overthrow so complete!
3. I remember the first time I became capable of observing outward objects with any kind of pleasure. I perceived that the fallen leaves had disappeared and that the young buds were shooting forth from the trees that shaded my window.

Explanation & Answer

View attached explanation and answer. Let me know if you have any questions.Choose two of the excerpts to explain and analyze the use of figurative language. For each excerpt Instances of figurative language are manifested in the second excerpt. The metaphor, which is among the ways used in expressing figurative language, is perceived in the phrase “...dreams that had been my food," which illustrates he or she had experienced dreams for quite an extended period. In the third excerpt, the usage of figurative language is seen through the incorporation of the simile "…buds were shooting forth from trees," which depicts leaves falling from the trees. The aspect of figurative language incorporates the usage of the words in an approach that deviates from the conventional order and the precise meaning purposely to convey a particular complicated meaning of specific phrases, evocative comparison, or else colorful meaning (Colston & Gibbs, 2021). This depicts that through figurative language, an ordinary sentence is used while referring to something in a direct manner without the need to state it. Figurative language may be expressed in distinct ways comprising; similes, personification, hyperbole, and metaphors. Through using figurative language, the meaning and the tone of particular text can be easily expressed. The tone of a certain passage is termed as the mood being embodied or evoked throughout the passage. For instance, hyperbole, which is among the approaches used in expressing figurative language, is used to exaggerate language, which in turn results in comic effect. Additional figurative language contributes to the meaning of the text due to its capability of transforming specific ordinary descriptions into events or occasions which are evocative (Colston & Gibbs, 2021). This leads to the realization of the emotional importance of the passages or texts, and more importantly, it turns a form into poetry. It also aids the readers in understanding the primary symbolism of a specific scene. In contributing the meaning of the text, metaphor as amid the ways used in describing figurative language is commonly used. This is because of its capability of using few words while conveying the meaning of a text. This way, instead of using a paragraph in describing a specific aspect, metaphor has the capability of offering a description that is stronger and having a lasting effect. This is displayed form the second excerpt, whereby the act of dreams is likened to food to depict frequent dreams. References Colston, H. L., & Gibbs, R. W. (2021). Figurative language communicates directly because it precisely demonstrates what we mean. Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology/Revue canadienne de psychologie expérimentale.
