5. The planet Mars has a radius of 3390 km and a mass of 6.4x1023 kg. a) Assume Mars is a spherical body. What is the gravitational acceleration at the surface of Mars, gM? b) The mean atmospheric density at the surface of Mars is only po = 0.02 kg/m3 (!), and the gas is made almost entirely of CO2 molecules. The surface temperature is only T = 220 K. Use the ideal gas law to predict the surface pressure of Mars, Po, in units of Earth atmospheres (1 atm = 101,325 N/m2). C) Assume for the moment that the surface of Mars is a square slab of cross sectional area A. Show that the total mass of the Martian atmosphere in the limit of a very extended atmosphere (very large z) is м = AHм Ро M - d) For the moment assume Mars is spherical again and compute its surface area, A. Plug this into your equation above and compute the total mass of Mars' atmosphere. e) Look up the mass of Earth's atmosphere and compare it to that of Mars. How do the two compare? 6. The drag force on a sphere is given by Stokes's Law, FD = 6anav, where y is the viscosity of the surrounding fluid and a is the radius of the sphere. Find the terminal speed v: attained by a spherical 1.0-mm diameter CO2 bubble rising in a carbonated beverage having a density p = 1.1 kg/L and viscosity n =1.6 mPa-s (note: milli Pascal seconds). If the glass is 25 cm tall and full of the fluid, how long would it take for the bubble to rise from the bottom to the top? (hint: start out by drawing a freebody diagram and making careful note of which direction the drag force acts)
