Description

The United Nations has continued to retain you as a consultant for a project that deals with climate and the environment. Most developed countries see the dangers of releasing too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and are committed to climate policies that attain a carbon-free future in the next 30 years. They already see the damaging effects that this gas alone is having on the living conditions of crops, wildlife, and humans. As a result, many member states are dissatisfied with the progress of the eight Millennium Development Goals for international development that they established in 2000. The member states see a substantial disconnect between several issues that developed and developing countries believe are priorities. For example, Burundi wants one of the goals to focus on food security, while Austria is adamant that a major global issue should be the negotiation of ceasefires in countries in the midst of civil wars. The UN wants you to work from the list below and prioritize two of the global community’s threats that it deems the most serious to environmental stability

1. Select two threats. Listed below are eight issues that the UN feels pose the most significant threats to global security. Some of these apply to the Earth’s 7.7 billion people, while others are limited primarily to developing countries. Regardless of where these threats are concentrated, your job as a consultant is to identify 2 of them that you consider the most critical to the globe’s population.

  1. The use of fossil fuels as an energy source.
  2. Globalization.
  3. Insufficient educational opportunities in developing countries.
  4. A lack of access to technology.
  5. Civil war (NOT the U.S. Civil War).
  6. The rise in oceans’ levels.
  7. Covid-19 and the global pandemic.
  8. The dangers of poor countries remaining poor
  1. Write a minimum of an 8 page persuasive paper about your two threats.
  2. Write an introduction paragraph of at least one-half page in length identifying the two threats you have selected and the purpose of the paper. Then, for the two threats you chose:
    1. Identify the factors that make it such a serious risk to the global environment that you would choose to present it to the UN.
    2. Analyze the role that humans have played in aggravating this threat to the Earth’s environment.
    3. Suggest initiatives that the global community can take to mitigate the worst effects of this environmental threat.
    4. Write a conclusion paragraph of at least one-half page in length that summarizes your impressions of these risks for global stability.

You must use at least 7 credible sources (excluding Wikipedia, dictionaries and encyclopedias) that are appropriate for the subjects under discussion.

include a graph, table or chart using quantifiable data that supports your argument.

Critical Threats to the Global Environment
Over the years, the world has continued to face adverse climate change. Today, we see a
rise in temperatures on the earth’s surface which has affected many parts of the global leading to
desertification. For developed countries, industrialization has led to the release of excessive carbon
dioxide, which has continued to endanger the atmosphere. With the United Nations focusing on
enhancing a conducive environment and appropriate industrial products, developed and
developing countries entail unique priorities. Some believe that the UN should concentrate on
ensuring that there is food security in developing countries.
In contrast, others would want the United Nations to focus on ceasing civil war, leading to
harmful radiation and chemicals in the atmosphere. From the eight issues highlighted by the UN,
fossil fuels as an energy source, and civil wars prove to be the most significant threats to the global
population. This paper focuses on the two threats by identifying the factors making them a severe
risk, analyzing the role played by human beings in aggravating them, and suggesting initiatives
that ought to be taken by the global community to mitigate the threats.
Factors That Make the Threats a Severe Risk to the Global Environment
The Use of Fossil Fuels as an Energy Source
Fossil fuels have continuously been used since the industrial revolution, which began in
Great Britain. Since that period, the consumption of these fuels has been increasing, and
industrially developed countries utilize them as the primary source of energy. With the discovery
of new deposits in various parts of the world, their reserve remains limited because the UN has
been focused on addressing the issue. These fuels entail oil, coal, and natural gas and are obtained
from the organic material present on the earth’s surface for millions of years.

Coal is primarily composed of carbon, and the carbon composition determines its
classification. In the United States, bituminous is the most prevalent type of coal burned, and it is
extracted through underground mining and sometimes from the surface. On the other hand, natural
gas is a gaseous fuel whose extraction often occurs while mining coal. Crude oil is the most
common type of fossil fuel, often refined to produce kerosene, jet fuel, gasoline, and propane
(Shindell & Smith, 2019). Various global economic leaders such as the United States, China, and
Japan have fueled their economic development through fossil fuels. However, various factors
make this form of energy serious to the global environment. These factors are discussed below.
The method applied to extract fossil fuel negatively impacts the environment.
Fossil fuels are extracted through two primary methods, which are drilling and mining.
Coal is extracted through mining, while drilling is implemented to extract gaseous or liquid fuels,
which are forces to the surface. The two processes encompass severe environmental impacts.
When underground mining is applied during coal extraction, mines often collapse, affecting the
subsurface and surface water flow. Also, mines fires are common whenever these regions are
abandoned. A long-term effect on the environment happens whenever acid drainage in the mines
occurs due to the poor management of coal mines. Here, water flows through these mines hence
becoming highly acidic where it contains he...
