HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT FOR 2/20/2017 READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS ALL THE WAY THROUGH BEFORE YOU BEGIN!! You need to go to YouTube.com and watch a video of an “Informative Speech” (hint – that’s what you need to type in) of a college student or high school student. Please go past the first few because I assure you I’ve already had someone watch them and write about them. I WANT YOU TO WRITE TWO PARAGRAPHS ABOUT THIS SPEECH THAT YOU WATCH: In the first paragraph I want you to tell me about the speaker and the speech that they have given. Remember a paragraph is AT LEAST 3-5 sentences. In the second paragraph I want you to actually critique the technique of the speaker using the seven steps to a good speech. These seven steps are: 1.) Attention step – get your audience’s attention by asking a question, telling a story, giving a quote, giving a statistic….something that get’s the audience’s attention. 2.) Need step – tell the audience why they need to know this information – you need to know this because…; I’m telling you this today because….. something along those lines. 3.) List the main points of the speech – the speaker should NOT just jump into their speech. The speaker should list the points that they are going to cover by saying something like today I’m going to tell you about a…., b…., c….. 4.) Body of the speech – this is where the speaker actually gives us all the information about a, b, c. in detail. 5.) Cue the audience that you’re closing – somewhere along in here you should hear the speaker say something like: in summary….; in closing…..; today I told you about….. – something so that the audience knows that they’re getting ready to end their speech. 6.) Relist the main points – this actually goes along with step 5 because the speaker should say something like: in summary today I’ve covered a, b, c…; or in closing today we talked about a, b, c…. 7.) Leave a lasting impression – the speaker should always leave the audience with something to remember their speech by. This could be as easy as asking a rhetorical question, telling a story, giving a quote, giving a statistic…… Using these seven steps tell me how good the speaker did on the video that you watched, but be specific as to what they did and didn’t do. Don’t just say they did an attention step, they did a need step…..be specific about how they did good on the speech or why they didn’t do as well. THIS ASSIGNMENT MUST BE TYPED, DOUBLE SPACED, TIMES ROMAN 12 POINT FONT. BE SURE TO INCLUDE THE ENTIRE WEB ADDRESS OF THE SPEECH THAT YOU WATCHED (THAT MEANS DON’T JUST PUT YOUTUBEW.COM) PLEASE PRINT THIS OFF AND BRING IT TO CLASS ON WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 22, 2017. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON YOUR PAPER!!
